Leung Jan- Leung Bik- Chan Wah Shun- Ip Man- Ip Ching- Bertrand Lim

Leung Jan (梁贊)
"Mr. Jan of Foshan" (佛山贊先生)

Leung Jan (梁贊)

Leung Jan (1826–1901): The Foshan Wing Chun Legend

Early Life & Training
Born Leung Tak-wing in Heshan, Guangdong, the man who would become known as "Mr. Jan of Foshan" began his martial journey at 18 under Leung Yee-tai, mastering Southern Shaolin skills. Yee-tai later introduced him to Wong Wah-bo (a fellow Gulao native), who imparted the complete Wing Chun system - forging the foundation of what we practice today.

The Foshan Years (1870s Onward)
While running his renowned medical practice at Wing Sang Tong (榮生堂), Leung Jan:

  • Trained select students privately in Wing Chun's combat essentials

  • Earned undefeated status in competitive bouts, gaining respect across martial circles

  • Became known as "King of Wing Chun Kuen" (詠春拳王) and "Mr. Jan of Foshan" (佛山贊先生)

Legacy & Lineage
His legacy flowed through two vital channels:

  1. Leung Bik (梁璧和, 1845–1911)

    • Trained under both Leung Jan and Wong Wah-bo

    • Later mentored a young Ip Man in Hong Kong (1909)

    • Direct ancestor of our Singapore Ip Man Wing Chun Kuen lineage

  2. Chan Wah-shun (找錢華1836– 1913) Money Changer Wah

    • Primary custodian of Leung Jan's Foshan school

    • Preserved the art during turbulent times

Leung Bik (梁壁)

Leung Bik (1843–1911): The Bridge Between Foshan and Modern Wing Chun

The Complete Master

Known respectfully as Mr. Bik (先生璧), Leung Bik-wo embodied Wing Chun’s most refined systems:

  • Mastered all core forms under his father Leung Jan and grand-teacher Wong Wah-bo

  • Perfected advanced weapons:

    • Muk Yan Jong (Wooden Dummy)

    • Bart Cham Dao (Eight-Cut Knives)

    • Luk Dim Boon Kwun (Six-and-a-Half Point Pole)

Exile and Reinvention

Fleeing late Qing Dynasty turmoil, Leung Bik:

  • Relocated to Hong Kong’s Cha Wai Street (now Jervois Street)

The Fateful Meeting with Ip Man (1909)

History changed when:

  1. The Challenge: Leung sparred a young Ip Man at a friend’s house, defeating him twice with effortless precision

  2. The Revelation: Recognizing Ip’s potential, Leung personally retrieved the humbled prodigy

  3. The Transmission: Over two years, he:

    • Taught subtle refinements absent in Ip Man’s prior training

    • Embedded Foshan’s complete art into its future torchbearer

Legacy Through Ip Man

Leung Bik’s 1911 passing marked:
♦ The end of an era: Last teacher directly trained by Wong Wah-bo’s generation
♦ The birth of modern Wing Chun: His teachings resurfaced through Ip Man’s students

Chan Wah-shun (1836–1913): The Bridge Between Generations

The Making of a Master

Known as "Money Changer Wah" (找錢華) for his currency exchange stall near Leung Jan’s Foshan clinic, Chan Wah-shun’s path to Wing Chun mastery was forged through sheer determination:

  • Developed extraordinary strength hauling heavy coin bags daily

  • Became Leung Jan’s disciple, training under both the grandmaster and his senior student Lee Wah

  • Mastered Dit Da (跌打), blending bone-setting medicine with combat expertise

Guardian of Foshan Wing Chun

In 1889, Chan:

  • Took over operations of the famed Wing Sang Tong (later renamed Hang Chai Tong)

  • Preserved Leung Jan’s legacy during the master’s periodic returns to Gulao Village

  • Established Foshan’s first public Wing Chun school (1906) at Yejia Village’s ancestral hall

The Ip Man Connection

In 1906, Chan accepted his final student – 12-year-old Ip Man – beginning a pivotal transfer of knowledge:

  • Entrusted Ng Chung-sok to continue Ip Man’s training

Ip Man 葉繼問

Grandmaster Ip Man (1893–1972): The Grandmaster Who Brought Wing Chun to the World

Foshan Beginnings

Born Ip Kai-man on October 1, 1893, into a wealthy Foshan family, the future grandmaster:

  • Began Wing Chun training at 9-13 under Chan Wah-shun (the master's final student)

  • Absorbed advanced techniques from Ng Chung-sok after Chan's stroke

  • Developed his signature precision through coin-bag strength training

The Hong Kong Revelation (1909-1911)

A humbling encounter reshaped his art when 16-year-old Ip:

  1. Challenged Leung Bik (Leung Jan's son) at a classmate's home

  2. Lost decisively twice, discovering gaps in his Foshan training

  3. Trained intensively with Leung until 1911, mastering:

    • Subtle weight-shifting principles

    • Rare wooden dummy applications

    • The complete weapon systems

Foshan Interlude (1916-1949)

Returning home at 24, Ip:

  • Served as a Nationalist police officer

  • Taught Wing Chun discreetly
  • Refined his close-quarters combat methods during turbulent times

Hong Kong Legacy (1950s Onward)

Fleeing communism in 1949, the 56-year-old grandmaster:

  • Started teaching through restaurant worker connections

  • Mentored legendary students including:

    • Leung Sheung (first Hong Kong disciple)

    • Wong Shun Leung ("King of Talking Hands")

    • Bruce Lee (who globalized Wing Chun concepts)

  • Founded the Ving Tsun Athletic Association (1967) to preserve authentic training

A towering figure in martial arts history, Ip Man (1893–1972) was the master who brought Wing Chun Kung Fu to the modern world. Born into a wealthy background in Foshan, China, he trained under legendary teachers Chan Wah Shun and Leung Bik before refining the art into its most effective form. His teachings shaped generations, including his most famous student, Bruce Lee. Fleeing political turmoil, Ip Man later revitalized Wing Chun in Hong Kong, ensuring its survival and global spread. Today, his legacy endures as the foundation of one of the world’s most respected martial arts.

Ip Hok-chun (葉學準)

Grandmaster Ip Chun (born Ip Hok-chun on 10 July 1924), also known as Yip Chun or Yip Jun, is a renowned Chinese martial artist and actor specializing in Wing Chun Kung Fu. He is the eldest son of the legendary Ip Man, the martial arts master who trained Bruce Lee. Ip Chun has a younger brother, Ip Ching, with whom he has carried on their father's legacy.

Foshan Beginnings

Born Ip Hok-Chun in Foshan, Kwangtung (now Guangdong) on 10 July 1924.

He would first learn the first form of wing chun, Sil Lim Tao, from Grandmaster Yuen Kay San revealing how close the Three Foshan Heros of Wing Chun were: Ip Man, Yuen Kay San, Yiu Choi.

The Hong Kong Journey

Ip Chun and his younger brother would join their father Ip Man in Hongkong and continue their training in Wing chun

In 1967, Ip Chun began teaching Wing Chun in Hong Kong. Among his earliest students were Leung Chung-wai and Ho Kay, the latter being the chairman of the Wing Chun Ip Chun Academy and a dedicated disciple for over 30 years. Many of his original students continue to train with him to this day.

After Ip Man's passing in December 1972, he entrusted his sons with rare film footage documenting his Siu Nim TaoChum Kiu, and Muk Yan Jong forms, ensuring their preservation for future generations. In 2014, Ip Chun was honored as a nominee to represent Wing Chun as the inheritor of its rich martial arts tradition.

Hong Kong Legacy (1950s Onward)

A globally respected instructor, Ip Chun has conducted seminars and taught Wing Chun worldwide, including in Australia, England, and the United States. On 10 July 2024, he celebrated his 100th birthday, marking a century of dedication to martial arts and the legacy of his father.

Grandmaster Ip Ching

Ip Ching

Grandmaster Ip Ching (born Ip Hok-ching, 1936 – 25 January 2020) was a renowned Chinese martial artist and Wing Chun master, best known as the second son of the legendary Grandmaster Ip Man. He played a significant role in preserving and promoting his father’s martial art legacy.

Born in Foshan, Guangdong Province, Ip Ching was the second son of Ip Man and his wife Cheung Wing-sing. In the early 1950s, his parents and sister, Ip Nga-sum, moved to Hong Kong in search of a better life. However, only his mother and sister eventually returned to Foshan, while Ip Ching remained in mainland China during a politically turbulent period.

In 1962, when Hong Kong temporarily reopened its borders, Ip Ching and his elder brother Ip Chun seized the opportunity to reunite with their father in Hong Kong.

Once in Hong Kong, Ip Ching studied Wing Chun directly under his father. Living and training in Ip Man’s home, he gained not only hands-on experience but also deep insight into his father's unique teaching methods. Throughout this time, Ip Ching often observed his father instructing other students, further enriching his understanding of the art.

After Ip Man’s death in 1972, Ip Ching continued to teach Wing Chun privately at home. In 1994, he retired from the textile business and dedicated himself fully to martial arts instruction.

Ip Ching’s contributions to Wing Chun extended into cinema. He served as a consultant—alongside his brother Ip Chun—for the films Ip Man 3 and Ip Man 4: The Finale. Though he declined public interviews and formal credit, his involvement ensured authenticity in the portrayal of Wing Chun on screen. Ip Ching was portrayed by Jim Liu in Ip Man 3 and by Ye He in Ip Man 4: The Finale.

Ip Ching passed away on 25 January 2020. Until his passing, Ip Ching remained a respected figure in the Wing Chun community, admired for his dedication to his father’s legacy and for his quiet but enduring influence on the martial art.

His Legacy is continued in Singapore under his Disciple Sifu Bertrand Lim, who he awarded a Ving Tsun Athletic Association Instructor Certificate to, signing the portion "received instruction from" as IP CHING, endorsing his disciple's skills. Sifu Ip Ching would also treat his grand students as family and train them whenever Sifu Bertrand Lim brought them on their regular trips.

Ving Tsun Athletic Association was created by Grandmaster Ip Man, and was an association that Grandmaster Ip Ching spend many years building up, bringing up the standard of Wing Chun Instructors Worldwide.
